As organizations seek to be inclusive and culturally diverse, ensuring leaders and team members have cultural competence is a must. Building the skills needed to understand what diversity and inclusion means and how to apply that understanding to create, and support, a diverse workplace does not happen organically. It takes dedicated time to acknowledge the bias within, have the difficult conversation and discuss how to make changes within your organization.
The Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence has developed the programs below that supports an environment to allow for people to explore their bias, learn how to talk about diversity and create a more inclusive workplace. These programs can be combined or delivered individually. Our diversity team will meet with you to discuss the needs of your organization.
Bias Busters I
This 2-hour interactive workshop is designed to increase awareness of bias and to explore how conscious and unconscious bias impacts communication and decision-making when we interact with individuals and groups that are different from us. The program includes:
- Implicit Association Test Prework
- Bias Buster Action Planning Support
Bias Buster II
This workshop builds on Bias Busters I to allow participants to further explore the effects of bias in everyday situations and determine alternative behaviors that stop bias in its tracks. This is a 2-hour skill building learning experience takes participants on a journey designed to develop skills that will transform behavior and systems of bias. The program includes:
- A skill building practicum
- Problem Based Learning Community Group
Becoming Culturally Inclusive
Becoming Culturally Inclusive takes the learners on a journey of self-awareness and reflection as they assess intercultural competence, as an individual and a group, using the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI)®.
The IDI® is the only theory-based assessment of intercultural competence. Unlike other tools that measure separate personal characteristics (e.g., open-mindedness, flexibility), the IDI allows you to see an individual’s or group’s progression along a continuum of cross-cultural competence. The Center staff includes IDI Qualified Administrators who consult, coach, and train leadership teams and their staff on developing intercultural competence and a development strategic plan.
This program includes:
- Intercultural Development Inventory – IDI®- registration and online self evaluation.
- A 4-hour group workshop/coaching
- Inclusive Coaching Circle
The Center will work with your organization to design a program that meets your specific needs. Contact Amanda Quintana Amanda@ColoradoNursingCenter.org OR Mauritha Hughes Mauritha@ColoradoNursingCenter.org to schedule a consultation meeting.
