“Preceptors live at the intersections of education and practice and of the present and the future. They practice at the point where theoretical learning meets reality and where the gap between current and needed knowledge and expertise gets filled,” says Beth Ulrich. Being an effective preceptor requires a separate skill set from being an expert clinician. If this is something that you’d like to pursue, we have just the opportunity for you!
In this series for novice preceptors, we will provide a set of tools that will serve you well as you embark on this new, expanded role! This series will be presented virtually and live. There will be a blend of brief didactic presentations followed by discussion, exercises and/or practice. Presented in five one-hour segments, all you need is a computer with a camera and a willingness to learn in this unique fashion!
What is a Preceptor?
A preceptor is an experienced clinical practitioner who guides new employees, new graduates, and students through the onboarding and competency validation process of unique clinical environments.
Assumption of this new role requires an additional skill set that includes refined skills in communication, feedback, support, and collaboration that go beyond current clinical expertise.
Studies reveal that new employees and students who have received quality precepting are much more likely to be retained in their positions. Additionally, the preceptors themselves report higher job satisfaction that translates into increased retention.
Bridging the gap between what a student learns in school and the real clinical world is increasingly challenging as our health care system becomes more and more complex. The same holds true for other practitioners who wish to change practice environments or positions.
