Foundational Skills for Entry Level Preceptors
April 5, 2023
What is a Preceptor?
A preceptor is an experienced clinical practitioner who guides new employees, new graduates, and students through the onboarding and competency validation process of unique clinical environments.
Bridging the gap between what a student learns in school and the real clinical world is increasingly challenging as our health care system becomes more and more complex. The same holds true for other practitioners who wish to change practice environments or positions.
In this series for novice and experienced preceptors, we will provide a set of tools that will serve you well as you embark on this new and expanded role! This series will be presented virtually and live.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the potential professional benefits you and your agency can gain from precepting students.
- Identify strategies that enhance the preceptor’s level of productivity.
- Develop powerful questions that will further student learning.
- Implement “the preceptor” tool with students.
- Implement communication strategies to facilitate instructive dialogue with students from any discipline.
- Discuss best practices for supporting individual learning outcomes of clinical students through evaluations.
- Explain the value of inter-professional precepting in the processional development of students.
